Balancing Family Life, Freelance Work, and Weekend Activities

Freelance work

This week, since it didn’t seem like it was going to rain, I wanted to suggest to my husband that we go camping at Birds Hill Campground. However, after he received and set up the bunk bed, it was such hard work that I couldn’t bring myself to suggest camping. Moreover, my brother-in-law asked for help with a project, so we were busy working last Friday night.

It was a web system development project, and I decided to help with the wireframe and responsive web development using HTML/CSS. We continued to have meetings and created the basic structure of the screens. Since it wasn’t an extremely complex system, it wasn’t too burdensome. I hope this project goes well, so the company does well and I can keep getting some work from them from time to time.

While my husband is attending school and focusing on his studies, I don’t think it’s possible to freelance by finding clients and doing work. On weekends, I would have to take full responsibility for childcare, and even though working from home online, it’s too hard to make commitments with the kids around.

Nevertheless, since my husband currently has no income, I keep thinking about what I can do to generate some extra income while taking care of the kids. Finding work without deadlines that I can do whenever I have time… it seems really difficult.

Ikea 쇼핑

We went to IKEA with the plan to remove the broken blinds and hang new curtains, but there were no curtains that fit our rod, so we bought other things instead.

Ikea products on a cart

A box to put the kids’ Legos in, a light to hang in the dark lower bunk bed, a wall clock, a soap dish… they were all necessary things anyway.

Ikea icecreams

Can’t skip ice cream, right?

Lego blocks

The Legos… if you count the money, it’s about $1000 worth. As they started getting lost one by one or mixed with other packages, I just threw them all into one bag. But then it became even harder to find them and they became unplayable, so I decided to put them in a wide tray-like box. It’s not much easier to find them, but it’s better than before.

The light we attached to the dark lower bunk bed. The lower bunk feels a bit cramped, so I hope the pretty light is some comfort.

Paintings

Gouache painting of cherries on a plate

This weekend, I worked hard on drawing while watching the kids. They’re not masterpieces, and most of them are failures…

Regrets: Since gouache covers well, I should have drawn the background and plate first and then added the cherries! I should have drawn shadows on the plate and then added the cherries! Even if it’s a hassle, I should have sketched first! The cheap gouache paint has colours that are duller than I expected. I should have used complementary colours instead of gray for the background!

This style is somewhat to my liking, so I should continue drawing more in this style.

paper puppets which looks like a green onion

While playing with paper and cooking play with the kids, I made a husband out of the leftover paper… an (anti) fan art.

Chess tournament

Today was the day of the tournament at my eldest’s chess class. Everyone played four matches each and checked the results, and our kid won three and lost one. When I asked if he was upset about losing once, he said he was okay. Compared to his peers, he’s doing quite well, and the teachers praise him a lot, so my husband seems more excited. Since my husband is helping the first child a lot, I’ll try to pay more attention to the second child.
