I’ve been keeping a diary for about four years now. Although I haven’t written every day, I’ve made it a habit to jot down thoughts and experiences when I can. As I’ve grown older, remembering the finer details of daily life has become challenging, and I started this diary with the intention of sharing my daily experiences with my children in the future.
I often wondered what to write in my diary. Even though it seemed like the daily life I recorded would be something I’d remember, I decided to write in a way that would be clear for my future self who might not recall all the details. I also thought that, when my children read it later, they wouldn’t know the nuances of my experiences, so I aimed to be as detailed as possible.
Although this goal was somewhat idealistic, there were many days that didn’t meet this standard. Some days were richly detailed, but most were just brief entries. On days when I felt I had nothing to write about, my entries were simply about feeling bored, sleepy, or tired.
Particularly well-written entries often coincided with days filled with anxiety or anticipation. For example, the first day of an internship was nerve-wracking but without any tasks to do. In such awkward, anxiety-filled situations, looking at my phone felt like a waste of time, so writing in my diary became a great way to fill that space. It felt like unloading the accumulating difficulties in my mind, which helped alleviate stress.
Writing in my diary has become an important habit in my life. While talking is enjoyable, conversations are often cautious, and I tend to worry about making mistakes. As I’ve gotten older and my family has grown, I’ve naturally become more of a listener. Hence, my diary feels like a friend who silently listens to whatever I have to say.
Keeping a diary has changed many aspects of my daily life.
Now, I’ve decided to open up my diary to everyone. Although my diary mainly contains personal stories, there are many things I want to share. I’m curious about what others might say if they read it and how they might feel. Nowadays, video is all the rage, but since video is ultimately based on writing, I’ve chosen to focus on traditional online writing.
While I can’t share every personal detail online, writing with an audience in mind promises a new kind of enjoyment, and I’m looking forward to it.
