Choosing Between Agency and In-House Designer Roles: A Guide for Canadian Graphic Design Graduates

As a recent graphic design graduate, you have the option to choose between two career paths: working at an agency or becoming an in-house designer. Which would you choose?

Option 1: ㅇㅇㅇ Agency This agency handles numerous projects for major clients like Samsung, Hyundai, and Chevrolet. The schedule is tight and busy, but the experience is invaluable.

Option 2: ㅁㅁㅁ Finance As an in-house designer for this financial company, you will create content and marketing materials related to finance.

For graphic design students, considering the roles of an agency designer versus an in-house designer is essential. Agency designers typically work on projects for various clients, while in-house designers focus on designs for the company they are employed by.

Working at a design agency offers opportunities to participate in various projects for different companies, keeping up with the latest trends and technologies. However, the schedule is often tight and the work demanding.

In-house designers, on the other hand, may have fewer diverse project opportunities, but they work within the company’s branding guidelines. This role often provides a more relaxed schedule and the chance to experience the corporate culture of a larger company.

Comparing Korean and Canadian Design Agencies

My experiences may not generalize to all design agencies, but here’s my perspective…

In Korea, I worked as a web publisher at a design agency for three years. I participated in numerous projects for various companies, learning a lot in a short time due to the heavy workload. The average age of employees was relatively young, and there were many new hires.

In Canada, I had short internships at two small design agencies. The experience felt quite similar to Korea, with tight project schedules. However, unlike Korea, there was no overtime, so there was pressure to complete work quickly during regular hours. Another difference was the relatively similar pay between in-house and agency designers in Canada, whereas in Korea, the pay difference was significant.

Which Designer Position is Suitable for New Graduates?

Many of my fellow graphic design program students also preferred working at design agencies after graduation due to the opportunities to gain diverse project experience. As a junior designer, I agree that working at an agency provides ample opportunities to develop skills. Agencies have different clients, offering varied experiences compared to being an in-house designer.

However, I personally preferred an in-house designer position after graduation. Here’s why:

Firstly, as an in-house designer, I could deeply understand and develop the company’s brand and identity. This work gave me a different sense of satisfaction compared to handling short-term projects at an agency. Being part of a company and consistently maintaining and developing its branding was meaningful to me.

Secondly, the work-life balance was much better. While agency schedules are tight and involve handling multiple projects quickly, in-house design work was more relaxed, which greatly helped me balance work and family life.

Thirdly, I considered long-term career development. As an in-house designer, I had the opportunity to build expertise based on a deep understanding of a specific industry. This could benefit me in taking on higher positions or more significant projects in the future.

Lastly, stable employment conditions and benefits were important factors. Agencies operate on a project basis, which can lead to job insecurity, whereas in-house positions generally offer a more stable employment environment. This stability was crucial for me and my family.

Ultimately, the choice depends on individual circumstances and goals. If you seek diverse experiences and rapid growth, an agency might be the right choice. However, for me, the stability and work-life balance of an in-house position were more important. Whichever path you choose, it’s essential to consider your goals and values carefully before making a decision.
